The fall PCA TX meeting began Friday, November 3 in San Antonio as we gathered
for group dinners at three different restaurants.
Saturday morning, 33 members and guests convened in the Meeting Room at the
Hampton Inn & Suites/San Antonio Airport. At 10 AM, President Allen Boyd
called the meeting to order welcoming Guest Dealers William
and Donna Pitt and Guest Artist Ken Rosenfeld.
Membership stands at 69 individuals representing 36 cities and 13 states.
Our Scholarship Chair announced that artist Cathy Richardson, the 2017
Sunny Lu Peer Memorial Scholarship recipient, has sent a beautiful
paperweight for PCA TX to auction at the March 10 meeting in Nacogdoches.
Items were presented for Show and Tell by 6 members. Both paperweights and
paperweight packing method and storage options were displayed.
Ken Rosenfeld and William Pitt presented very informative afternoon programs.
“Ken Rosenfeld Glass” was both an inside look at his studio and an overview
of the technical process required to produce a paperweight. Ken built
everything in his studio and he explained the importance of the scale and
placement of equipment. He called composition—balancing color combinations
and design elements—vital for a successful paperweight. Members thanked
Ken for donating a paperweight to the L. H. Selman “Glass For Life” auction
to benefit a charity aiding Hurricane Harvey victims.
William Pitt presented “The Obscure and Lesser Known Paperweight Artists”—
a survey of 25 artists, many from the 1960s–1980s, who produced lampwork,
millefiori or crimp flower paperweights. Many of the artists began their
careers at established glass works while others worked independently to
develop their skills. Janet Kelman, Chris Belleau, Robert Grablow,
Harold Hacker, Oscar “Skip” Woods, Robbie Mason and Barry Farley were a
mong the artists highlighted.
The meeting ended with door prizes donated by members. The
winning names were drawn by Beverly McIntosh, our newest member.
After group dinners at nearby restaurants, members enjoyed a “farewell and
sweets” social hour at the hotel.
