The PCA TX fall Zoom meeting began on Saturday, October 21 when 33 members and friends logged on at 1:00 PM.
There was time for greetings and catching up before President Mike Taylor began the meeting at
1:30 PM, welcoming everyone and introducing Eric Jump, owner of The Paperweight Collection in Los Angles CA [The Paperweight Collection], as our featured presenter for the meeting. Eric also serves as the PCA National’s Dealer Representative and is a member of the PCA National Board of Directors.
Eric gave an update on the May 15–18, 2024 PCA Convention plans [PCA National]. He emphasized that the Convention is the best opportunity to visit with artists, learn from lectures, watch artist demonstrations, and meet and greet in person.
Eric began his presentation, “The Paperweights that Shaped Our World” by saying that the hard
part was deciding which pieces to leave out. The artists he highlighted began with Venetian Pietro
Bigaglia in 1845 and ended with contemporary artist Clinton Smith. Jump’s images showed how
the antique weights set the standards in terms of aesthetics and how contemporary artists have
expanded the art through techniques, structure and subject matter.
Jump’s presentation was a splendid review of paperweight history and an exciting commentary
on the current state of the art. We had numerous participants in Texas and the rest of the USA,
but Myfanwy Spellerberg, President of the New Zealand/Australia Paperweight Collectors
Association, won the prize for the viewer from the farthest distance.
We recorded Eric’s excellent presentation and will post a link to it as soon as we have edited it
for background noise.
President Taylor closed the meeting at 2:50 PM.
